Chipotle Drive Thru: How a Chipotlane Actually Works
Chipotle has more than 1,500 drive-thru lanes and almost no one can order food at one. That sounds like a complaint but it is the entire design: a Chipotlane is a collection point for an order you have already placed and paid for in the app. Pull up without having done that and there is nothing for the team to hand you. Here is how the format actually works, how it has grown, and the one reliable way to find out whether your local restaurant has one.

A Chipotle drive thru is called a Chipotlane, and it is a pick-up lane, not an ordering lane. You order ahead on the Chipotle app or chipotle.com, choose the Chipotlane pickup option, then collect without leaving the car. Chipotle passed 1,500 Chipotlanes in September 2026 and says the pick-up itself takes under 30 seconds.
- You cannot order at the lane. Order on the app first, then collect.
- More than 1,500 Chipotlanes — the 1,500th opened September 2026.
- Chipotle says pick-up takes under 30 seconds on average.
- Around 80% of new restaurants are meant to include one.
- The locator does not flag which restaurants have one — the app does.
- First introduced in 2018, around Columbus, Ohio.
What a Chipotlane Is
Chipotle own annual report puts it in a single clause:
— Chipotle Mexican Grill, Form 10-K
Note what that sentence does and does not say. Chipotle does call it a drive-through format — the common line that “Chipotle insists it is not a drive-thru” misreads the company. What it is specific about is the purpose: pick-up of digital orders.
Across its announcements Chipotle has used the phrase “digital order drive thru pick-up lane” consistently since 2020. The distinction is not the words drive-thru. It is ordering versus collecting.
| Conventional drive-thru | Chipotlane | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you order | At the speaker | In the app, before you arrive |
| Where you pay | At the window | In the app |
| When food is made | After you order | Before you arrive |
| At the window | Order, pay, wait, collect | Collect |
| Walk-up possible? | Usually not | No — order first |
How to Use One
Chipotle own instruction, from its September 2026 announcement, is two steps:
- “Guests can order ahead on the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com”
- “select the Chipotlane pickup option to retrieve their order without leaving their vehicle”
That second step is the one people miss. Choosing Chipotlane at checkout is what routes your order to the lane — if you pick standard in-store pickup, your food goes to the shelf inside and the lane team will not have it.
Delivery couriers use it too. Chipotle describes the format as giving “guests and delivery drivers the ability to pick up their Chipotle orders without leaving their cars”, which explains why a lane can be busy at odd hours. Our online ordering guide walks through the app, and the delivery fee guide covers what couriers cost you.

How to Find One
This is more awkward than it should be, and it is worth being direct about why.
So the reliable method is the app:
- Open the Chipotle app and set your restaurant.
- Build an order and go to checkout.
- Look at the pickup options. If Chipotlane appears, that restaurant has one. If it does not, it has not.
One useful rule of thumb: Chipotlanes are overwhelmingly a suburban and roadside format. They need a site with vehicle access and room for a dedicated lane, which is why they are common in strip-mall and standalone locations and rare in dense city centres. Our NYC guide is a good illustration — a city of 131 restaurants built almost entirely without them.
How Many There Are
Chipotle publishes a running total only when it crosses a 500-unit milestone:
| Milestone | When |
|---|---|
| Format introduced | Early 2018, greater Columbus, Ohio |
| 100th Chipotlane | July 2020 |
| 500th | November 2022 |
| 1,000th | November 2024 |
| 1,500th | September 2026 — Bradenton, Florida |
Chipotle noted at the 1,500 mark that it had “added 500 Chipotlanes in less than two years”. Because the next published total will be 2,000, the honest answer to “how many are there today” is more than 1,500 — anything more precise would be a guess.
The attach rate, and where it actually sits
Chipotle 2026 guidance says “around 80% of new company-owned restaurants will have a Chipotlane.” The reported figures tell a slightly different story:
| Period | Restaurants opened | With a Chipotlane | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q3 2026 | 84 | 53 | 63% |
| Q2 2026 | 100 | 80 | 80% |
| Full year 2025 | 334 | 257 | 77% |
The third quarter of 2026 came in well under target. One quarter is not a trend — site availability moves these numbers around — but it is worth knowing that the 80 per cent figure is a goal rather than a description of what is currently being built.
For context, Chipotle had 4,287 restaurants in total at 30 September 2026, and has set out a long-term goal of 7,000 in North America. Our location count guide tracks the overall estate.
Why Chipotle Keeps Building Them
The commercial logic sits in one number: digital sales were 38.8 per cent of Chipotle food and beverage revenue in the third quarter of 2026, up from 36.7 per cent a year earlier. Close to two in five orders are already placed on a screen. A Chipotlane is the physical hand-over point for that, and it does not slow down the line inside.
Chipotle own characterisations, in its words:
- “Chipotlanes continue to perform well and are helping enhance guest access and convenience, as well as increase new restaurant sales, margins and returns.” — third quarter 2026 results
- “has consistently delivered higher volumes and returns than traditional Chipotle restaurants” — September 2026
- “Chipotlanes are a powerful growth engine for Chipotle, delivering greater convenience and access for our guests and driving strong restaurant performance” — Jason Kidd, Chief Operating Officer

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chipotle have a drive thru?
Yes, but not a conventional one. Chipotle’s format is called a Chipotlane, and its own annual report describes it as “our drive through format for guest pick-up of digital orders”. The key word is pick-up: you place and pay for the order in the Chipotle app or on chipotle.com first, select the Chipotlane pickup option, then collect it from the lane without leaving your car.
Can you order at a Chipotlane?
No — the lane is for collecting an order you have already placed. Chipotle’s own instruction is to “order ahead on the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com” and then “select the Chipotlane pickup option to retrieve their order without leaving their vehicle.” If you drive up without having ordered in advance, there is nothing waiting to be handed over, and you will be directed inside.
How many Chipotlanes are there?
Chipotle passed 1,500 in September 2026, when the 1,500th opened in Bradenton, Florida. Chipotle noted at the time that it had “added 500 Chipotlanes in less than two years.” It only publishes a running total at 500-unit milestones, so the figure today is somewhat higher than 1,500 — but Chipotle has not said by how much, and we are not going to estimate it.
How do I find a Chipotle with a drive thru?
Use the Chipotle app, not the website locator. Chipotle’s location data does not include a Chipotlane flag, and the individual restaurant pages on its locator list only in-store pickup and delivery as service options. In the app, a restaurant that offers Chipotlane will present it as a pickup choice when you build your order — if it does not appear, that restaurant does not have one.
How fast is a Chipotlane?
Chipotle has published one figure: “On average, it takes guests less than 30 seconds to complete the Chipotlane process.” That is the collection itself rather than the whole wait — the food is made to an order placed earlier, so the time that matters is how far ahead you ordered. The app gives an estimated ready time when you check out.
When did Chipotle start Chipotlanes?
Chipotle introduced the format in early 2018, in the greater Columbus, Ohio area. Growth has been steady since: the 100th opened in July 2020, the 500th in November 2022, the 1,000th in November 2024 and the 1,500th in September 2026. Chipotle has never published the address of the very first one.
Are all new Chipotles getting a Chipotlane?
That is the plan, but not quite the reality. Chipotle’s 2026 guidance says “around 80% of new company-owned restaurants will have a Chipotlane.” The actual rate has run below that recently — of the 84 company-owned restaurants opened in the third quarter of 2026, 53 included a Chipotlane, which is 63 per cent. Earlier periods were closer to target at 80 per cent in Q2 2026 and 77 per cent across 2025.
Can delivery drivers use the Chipotlane?
Yes. Chipotle describes the format as giving “guests and delivery drivers the ability to pick up their Chipotle orders without leaving their cars”, so couriers collecting a delivery order use the same lane. That is part of why the lanes are busy at times that do not match normal customer peaks.
Methodology
Chipotlane figures, definitions and quotations on this page are taken from Chipotle own newsroom releases, its quarterly results and its annual report on Form 10-K, read on 29 October 2026, and are quoted rather than paraphrased wherever the wording matters. Two widely repeated claims are deliberately absent because we could not source them to Chipotle: a percentage sales uplift for Chipotlane restaurants, which appears in trade coverage as a paraphrase rather than a Chipotle figure, and a statement that the lanes have no microphone, which Chipotle has not said in any document we could find. Chipotle reports a cumulative Chipotlane total only at 500-unit milestones, so the most recent published total is from October 2026 and the true figure today is higher.
