Chipotle Guac Mode: What It Is and How to Get In
Guac Mode is the most single-minded promotion Chipotle has ever run: a Rewards benefit that exists purely to give away free guacamole at unpredictable moments. It launched in 2020, returned in 2022 with a Cash App tie-in, and handed out millions of orders of free guac along the way. Here is what it was, how it worked, and where that idea lives now.
Guac Mode is a Chipotle Rewards benefit that unlocks surprise free guacamole rewards through the year. Members verified into it at chipotle.com/guacmodeverified, and when Chipotle activated a drop the reward appeared in the My Rewards section of the account. It first launched in February 2020 and relaunched in March 2022 alongside a Cash App tie-in.
- Surprise free guac rewards dropped into Rewards accounts.
- Verification required at a dedicated Chipotle page, not automatic.
- Rewards appeared in My Rewards when Chipotle activated a drop.
- Launched Feb 2020, relaunched March 2022 with a Cash App element.
- Over 7 million free guac orders given out in its first two years.
- Freepotle now carries the same idea with monthly drops.
What Guac Mode Was
Chipotle describes Guac Mode as a benefit for Rewards members that unlocks access to surprise free guac rewards throughout the year. That is the whole concept. No points to save, no game, no purchase threshold — just guacamole appearing unannounced.
It launched in February 2020 and was relaunched in March 2022, timed to the third anniversary of the Rewards programme and paired with a Cash App element that added cash drops to the guacamole.
By the time of that relaunch, Chipotle stated it had given out more than seven million orders of free guac to enrolled fans.
How It Worked
- Verify. Members enrolled at a dedicated page, chipotle.com/guacmodeverified, during an open window.
- Wait. Chipotle activated drops on its own schedule, which is what made them surprises.
- Check My Rewards. When a drop activated, an extra reward appeared in that section of the account.
- Redeem it like any other reward, in the app or by scanning in-restaurant.
The verification step is the part people forget. Unlike Freepotle, Guac Mode was not automatic — members who never verified simply never received drops, however loyal they were.
Where That Idea Lives Now
Guac Mode ran as a recurring campaign rather than a permanent programme feature. The surprise-free-food function it pioneered now sits inside Freepotle, which the April 2026 Rewards on Repeat relaunch committed to monthly drops deposited automatically into member accounts.
That is a meaningful upgrade in one respect: no verification step, no enrolment window to miss. The trade is that the item varies rather than always being guacamole.
