Chipotle Paleo: The 11 Items Chipotle Tags Compliant

Paleo is the easier of the two to order at Chipotle, and for one specific reason: it gets you steak and barbacoa, which Chipotle does not tag Whole30. That takes the compliant protein list from two items to four and makes a genuinely varied meal possible. Chipotle publishes these designations itself, and Paleo is one of only two diets still offered as a filter in its app.

Quick Answer

Chipotle tags eleven items Paleo. All four core proteins qualify — chicken, steak, barbacoa and carnitas — along with fajita vegetables, guacamole, three of the four salsas, romaine and supergreens. Rice, beans, corn salsa, all dairy, tortillas and the honey vinaigrette are out. Paleo is still one of the two Lifestyle filters in the Chipotle app.

🎯 Key Takeaways
  • Eleven items carry Chipotle Paleo tag — the full list is below.
  • All four core proteins qualify, unlike Whole30.
  • Paleo is still a filter in the Chipotle app; Whole30 is not.
  • Roasted chili-corn salsa is the one salsa that is out.
  • No sugar on Chipotle ingredient list — honey is the only sweetener.
  • Oils are canola and high-oleic sunflower, not soybean oil.

The 11 Paleo Items

Chipotle publishes its own per-item diet designations — the data behind the dietary filters in its app. Read on 29 October 2026, eleven items carry the Paleo tag:

Item Calories Protein Also Whole30?
Chicken 180 32 g Yes
Steak 150 21 g No
Barbacoa 170 24 g No
Carnitas 210 23 g Yes
Fajita Vegetables 20 1 g Yes
Guacamole 230 2 g Yes
Fresh Tomato Salsa 25 0 g Yes
Tomatillo-Green Chili Salsa 15 0 g Yes
Tomatillo-Red Chili Salsa 30 0 g Yes
Romaine Lettuce — 0 g Yes
Supergreens Lettuce Blend 5 0 g Yes

All four core proteins are on it. That is the single biggest practical advantage Paleo has over Whole30 at Chipotle.

One caveat that applies to every page like this. Chipotle states that “individual foods may come into contact with one another during preparation, which is not reflected on this chart”, and that it “cannot guarantee the complete absence” of an allergen in its restaurants. Everything below is about what goes into each item, not about what might touch it on the line.

Paleo vs Whole30 at Chipotle

Chipotle tags eleven items Paleo and nine Whole30. The difference is exactly two items:

Paleo Whole30
Chicken ✔ ✔
Carnitas ✔ ✔
Steak ✔ ✘
Barbacoa ✔ ✘
Vegetables, guacamole, 3 salsas, both lettuces ✔ ✔
Available as an app filter Yes No

Chipotle does not publish the reasoning behind that distinction, and we are not going to supply one. But it is not a new or accidental classification. When Chipotle launched its preset Lifestyle Bowls on 2 January 2019, it published both recipes, and they split the same way:

2019 preset bowl Chipotle own description
Paleo Salad Bowl “Romaine lettuce, barbacoa, fajita veggies, green salsa and guacamole”
Whole30 Salad Bowl “Romaine lettuce, carnitas, fajita veggies, tomato salsa and guacamole”

Barbacoa on the Paleo bowl, carnitas on the Whole30 bowl — matching today tagging exactly, seven years apart.

Those preset bowls are no longer sold. Chipotle /lifestyle-bowls page now redirects to its High Protein menu, and Paleo survives only as an app filter. The useful takeaway is that Paleo gives you twice as many protein options. Our Whole30 guide covers the narrower list.

Three Builds That Work

All figures are Chipotle own per-item numbers; the totals are our addition of them.

1. The high-protein build — 455 cal, 35g protein

Salad · supergreens · chicken · fajita vegetables · fresh tomato salsa · guacamole

The best protein-to-calorie ratio on the menu. Chicken carries 32g of protein in 180 calories, more than any other Chipotle protein and in fewer calories than all but steak.

2. The leanest build — 375 cal, 24g protein

Salad · supergreens · steak · fajita vegetables · tomatillo-green chili salsa · guacamole

Steak is the lowest-calorie protein at 150, though it is also the lowest in protein of the three meats at 21g. Available on Paleo, not on Whole30.

3. The richest build — 480 cal, 26g protein

Salad · romaine · carnitas · fajita vegetables · tomatillo-red chili salsa · guacamole

Carnitas is the highest-calorie protein at 210 and the highest in saturated fat at 7g, which some people on Paleo actively want and others avoid.

The guacamole is not optional in practice. Strip it out of any of these and you are at roughly 150–250 calories, which is a snack rather than a meal. At 230 calories, 22g of fat and 6g of fibre, guacamole is what makes a Paleo order at Chipotle actually filling. Our guacamole calorie breakdown has the detail.

What Is Out, and Why

Item Reason
White rice, brown rice Grain
Black beans, pinto beans Legume
Sofritas Made from soy beans — a legume
Roasted chili-corn salsa Corn is a grain
Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream, queso blanco Dairy
Flour tortillas, crispy corn tortillas, tortilla chips Grain
Chipotle-honey vinaigrette Honey; also the saltiest item on the menu at 850 mg
Red chimichurri sauce Not tagged Paleo by Chipotle

Where Strict Paleo May Disagree

Chipotle tag is a designation by a restaurant company, not a ruling by a governing body — Paleo does not have one. Two places where your own standard may be stricter than Chipotle:

  • Seed oils. Chipotle cooks with canola oil and high-oleic sunflower oil. Many strict Paleo interpretations exclude both. Chipotle tagging does not reflect that view. On the other hand, there is no soybean oil, peanut oil or rice bran oil anywhere on its ingredient list, which is unusual for the category.
  • Nightshades. Tomatoes, tomatillos and every chilli on the menu are nightshades. Standard Paleo permits them and Chipotle tags them compliant; auto-immune protocol versions of Paleo do not. If you follow AIP, the salsas and the fajita vegetables all come off the list, which leaves protein, lettuce and guacamole.

Neither point is a correction to Chipotle — both are cases where the label depends on whose definition you are using, which is worth knowing before you rely on an app filter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I order Paleo at Chipotle?

Chipotle tags eleven items Paleo: chicken, steak, barbacoa, carnitas, fajita vegetables, guacamole, fresh tomato salsa, both tomatillo salsas, romaine lettuce and the supergreens blend. A salad built from those is fully within Chipotle’s own designation. Leave out the rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, queso, tortilla, chips and the chipotle-honey vinaigrette.

Is Chipotle steak Paleo?

Yes. Chipotle tags steak as Paleo and Keto. Notably it does not tag steak as Whole30, and the same applies to barbacoa — those two items are the entire difference between Chipotle’s Paleo list and its Whole30 list. Chipotle does not publish the reason for that distinction. For Paleo purposes, steak is compliant by Chipotle’s own designation.

Is Chipotle rice Paleo?

No. Rice is a grain, and Chipotle does not tag either its cilantro-lime white rice or its brown rice as Paleo. Beans are out as well, since legumes are excluded on Paleo — that covers black beans, pinto beans and sofritas, which is made from soy beans. The practical effect is that a Paleo order at Chipotle is a salad rather than a bowl with a base.

Which Chipotle salsa is not Paleo?

The roasted chili-corn salsa, because corn is a grain. The other three — fresh tomato salsa, tomatillo-green chili salsa and tomatillo-red chili salsa — all carry Chipotle’s Paleo tag. That is worth knowing because corn salsa is the sweetest of the four and the one people reach for most often to add flavour to a plain salad.

Does Chipotle still have a Paleo bowl?

Not as a preset you can tap. Chipotle used to sell preconfigured Lifestyle Bowls including a Paleo one, and that range is no longer offered — its preset meals are now built around the High Protein menu. Paleo does still exist as a dietary filter in the app, so you can filter the menu by it; you just build the bowl yourself rather than ordering it by name.

Is Chipotle guacamole Paleo?

Yes, and it is close to essential on a Paleo order. Chipotle tags guacamole Paleo, Whole30, Keto, vegetarian and vegan. At 230 calories with 22g of fat and 6g of fibre it is what turns a protein-and-leaves salad into a meal. It is also free of charge on a veggie or sofritas build, though sofritas itself is not Paleo.

What is the difference between the Chipotle Paleo and Whole30 lists?

Exactly two items: steak and barbacoa. Chipotle tags eleven items Paleo and nine Whole30, and those two proteins are the only entries in the first list that are missing from the second. Everything else — the vegetables, the three salsas, guacamole and both lettuce options — carries both tags.

What oil does Chipotle cook with?

Two oils appear on Chipotle’s published ingredient list: canola oil and high-oleic sunflower oil. There is no soybean oil, no peanut oil and no rice bran oil on the list. Strict Paleo interpretations differ on seed oils, so if you avoid canola specifically this is worth knowing — but it is not something Chipotle reflects in its own Paleo tagging.

Methodology

The compliant list on this page is Chipotle own per-item Paleo designation, read directly from the diet data behind chipotle.com allergens and special diets page on 29 October 2026, together with Chipotle published 53-ingredient list and its allergen chart. We are reporting how Chipotle classifies its own items rather than applying our own reading of Paleo rules to the menu, and where the two could differ – strict Paleo interpretations vary on things like cooking oils and nightshades – this page says so. Paleo has no single governing body, so treat Chipotle tag as a starting point and apply your own standard. Recipes, suppliers and limited-time items change without notice.
