15 Restaurants Like Chipotle (Ranked by How Close They Are)
Restaurants like Chipotle split into three groups, and knowing which group you want saves a lot of disappointment. Some are near-identical burrito lines competing on the same ground. Some run the exact same format in a different cuisine. And a couple are simply the nearest thing available when no real alternative exists. Here are fifteen, grouped honestly rather than ranked by how much we like them.

The closest alternatives to Chipotle are Qdoba (which includes free queso and guacamole), Moe's Southwest Grill, and the scratch-cooking regionals Cafe Rio and Costa Vida. For the same build-your-own format in a different cuisine, try Cava (Mediterranean), Bibibop (Korean), or Sweetgreen (salads and grain bowls).
- Qdoba is the closest match and includes free queso and guac.
- Cafe Rio and Costa Vida cook from scratch daily; worth a detour.
- Cava runs the same format in Mediterranean, with 476 locations.
- El Pollo Loco had 511 restaurants as of October 2026, mostly in LA.
- Rubio's survived its 2024 bankruptcy and holds 83 locations.
- Salad and Go closed permanently in August 2026; skip old lists.
The Closest Matches
These four run the same format, the same menu categories, and compete with Chipotle for the same lunch. If what you want is a burrito line, start here.
1. Qdoba Mexican Eats
The closest thing to a direct substitute. Same assembly line, same categories, and one policy that changes the maths: the first portion of queso and guacamole is free on create-your-own entrees. At Chipotle those cost $2.95 to $3.40 each. With 840-plus locations across the US, Canada and Puerto Rico, it is also findable in most large markets. Full breakdown on our Chipotle vs Qdoba page.
2. Moe's Southwest Grill
Just over 540 locations across 35 states, down from around 580 a year earlier. The signature Homewrecker burrito includes guacamole in the build, and Moe Monday is the strongest recurring weekday deal either chain offers. Free chips and salsa apply at select locations rather than everywhere, so check yours. See Chipotle vs Moe's.
3. Freebirds World Burrito
Texas-born in 1987 and still concentrated there, with 50-plus locations. Known for oversized build-your-own burritos and a queso following, plus clearly signposted keto, paleo and vegan builds. If you are in Texas it is a genuine upgrade on the national chains; outside Texas you will struggle to find one.
4. Baja Fresh
Smaller than it once was, now somewhere in the 55 to 80 range under MTY Food Group. Its pitch has not changed in twenty years and is still the best one-line summary in the category: no freezers, no microwaves, no can openers. The self-serve salsa bar is the part Chipotle has never matched.
Regional Chains Worth a Detour
5. Cafe Rio Mexican Grill
Around 146 locations, mostly across the Mountain West and Southwest. Everything is made from scratch daily and tortillas are pressed to order, which is a real difference you can taste. The sweet pork barbacoa is the order. If you have one nearby, it beats Chipotle on food and loses on speed.
6. Costa Vida
94 locations, founded in Utah in 2003 and built on much the same scratch-cooking promise as Cafe Rio, with a coastal-Mexican angle. The two are close enough that most people simply go to whichever is nearer.
7. Rubio's Coastal Grill
83 locations across California, Arizona and Nevada. Rubio's closed 48 California restaurants and filed Chapter 11 in 2024, then sold to its lenders, and has been stable since. It is the chain that popularised the Baja fish taco in the United States, and fish tacos remain the reason to go rather than the burritos.
8. El Pollo Loco
511 restaurants as of July 1, 2026, with roughly seven in ten in greater Los Angeles. Not a burrito line at all: the product is citrus-marinated, fire-grilled bone-in chicken. It belongs on this list because it scratches the same weeknight Mexican-food itch with a better protein than most of the chains above.
The Cheaper Options
9. Taco Bell
Roughly 7,760 US locations and the Luxe Value Menu launched in January 2026 with ten items at three dollars or less. Nothing here approaches a Chipotle bowl in portion or ingredient standard, and it is not trying to. If the question is how to eat for under five dollars, this is the answer. See Chipotle vs Taco Bell.
10. Del Taco
Around 576 locations, sold by Jack in the Box to Yadav Enterprises in late 2025. It is the only major chain doing both Mexican food and burgers with fries, which makes it the practical pick when a group cannot agree. Quick-service rather than fast-casual, and priced accordingly.
Same Format, Different Cuisine
These four borrow the Chipotle line wholesale and point it at something else entirely. If what you liked about Chipotle was the build rather than the burrito, this is the group to explore.
11. Cava
476 restaurants as of mid-2026 and growing fast, all company-owned. Mediterranean, with eight bases, eight mains including braised lamb and a glazed salmon added in April 2026, and six dips and spreads that are part of the build rather than paid add-ons. The closest thing to Chipotle in structure and the furthest in flavour. Full comparison at Cava vs Chipotle.
12. Sweetgreen
287 restaurants across 24 states and Washington DC as of October 2026. Salads and warm grain bowls, seasonal menu, heavy automation. Growth has slowed sharply, with only six net new openings in the first half of 2026. Better than Chipotle if vegetables are the point; considerably worse if protein is.
13. Dig Inn
Around 41 locations, concentrated in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and the Washington DC corridor, and now back to its original Dig Inn name after six years as simply Dig. Locally farm-sourced, scratch-cooked, vegetable-forward bowls. The smallest chain on this list and arguably the best food.
14. Bibibop Asian Grill
84 locations and growing. Build-your-own Korean rice bowls, with the name taken from bibimbap. The line works exactly the way Chipotle does, which makes the switch effortless, and the flavour profile is far enough away to be a real change.
15. Pokeworks
80-plus locations across the United States, Canada and Taiwan. Hawaiian-inspired build-your-own poke bowls and poke burritos. Mostly franchised, mostly urban, and the lightest option on this list by some distance.
One to Cross Off Your List
How to Pick
| What you want | Go to |
|---|---|
| The same thing, with free guac and queso | Qdoba |
| A standing weekday deal | Moe's, on Monday |
| Genuinely better food, if you are near one | Cafe Rio or Costa Vida |
| The same format, different flavours | Cava or Bibibop |
| To spend under five dollars | Taco Bell |
| Fish tacos | Rubio's |
| Grilled chicken instead of a bowl | El Pollo Loco |
| Something light | Sweetgreen, Dig Inn or Pokeworks |
One thing worth saying plainly: Chipotle wins on availability more than on merit. With 4,201 restaurants it is usually the only one of these you can actually get to, and several chains on this list would beat it on food if they were as easy to reach.

Frequently Asked Questions
What restaurant is most similar to Chipotle?
Qdoba Mexican Eats. It runs the same assembly-line format, the same core menu of burritos, bowls, tacos and quesadillas, and competes directly on price. The one structural difference is that Qdoba includes the first portion of queso and guacamole free on create-your-own entrees, which Chipotle charges $2.95 to $3.40 for.
Is there anything cheaper than Chipotle?
Yes. Taco Bell Luxe Value Menu, launched in January 2026, carries ten items priced at three dollars or less, against a Chipotle bowl at $10.75 to $13.75. Del Taco also sits well below Chipotle on price. Neither offers a comparable portion or ingredient standard, which is the trade.
What is like Chipotle but not Mexican?
Cava is the closest: the identical build-your-own format applied to Mediterranean food, with 476 locations as of mid-2026. Bibibop Asian Grill does the same for Korean rice bowls, Pokeworks for Hawaiian poke, and Sweetgreen and Dig Inn for salads and warm grain bowls.
Is Qdoba better than Chipotle?
On value for a loaded order, yes, because queso and guacamole come free on create-your-own entrees. On availability it is not close, since Chipotle operates 4,201 restaurants to Qdoba’s 840-plus. Most people choose between them on which one is nearer rather than on merit.
Which Chipotle alternative has the best ingredients?
Cafe Rio and Costa Vida both cook from scratch daily, with Cafe Rio pressing tortillas to order, and both are widely rated above the national chains on food quality. The catch is coverage: Cafe Rio runs around 146 locations and Costa Vida 94, almost all in the western United States.
Did Salad and Go close?
Yes. Salad and Go filed for Chapter 11 on August 4, 2026 and closed all of its locations the following day, after peaking at 142 restaurants in 2025. Any list still recommending it is out of date. It was a drive-thru-only salad concept rather than a true Chipotle alternative.
Methodology
Location counts come from each company own investor releases and official brand sites as of the most recent reporting period. Menu contents come from each brand official menu and nutrition guides. Chipotle prices reflect our own 2026 in-restaurant checks across Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. Neither Cava nor Qdoba publishes national prices, so competitor figures are described as ranges rather than stated as fixed. Confirm current details with the restaurant before ordering.
