The Chipotle Bag: Design, Essays and Collectibles
The Chipotle bag is the only fast-food packaging held in a rare book library at Yale, which is a reasonable claim to the most interesting takeaway bag in the business. For two years it carried original essays by thirty writers, and the hand-drawn artwork on it has since spawned a meme solid enough that Chipotle built a national promotion around it. Here is the design, the essays and what is actually collectible.

In May 2014 Chipotle launched Cultivating Thought, printing original essays on its bags and cups in partnership with author Jonathan Safran Foer. It ran four installments with 30 contributors, ending in April 2016, and is now archived by Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The bag’s hand-drawn artwork inspired Chipotle Tatted Like a Chipotle Bag promotion.
- Cultivating Thought launched May 2014 with Jonathan Safran Foer.
- Four installments, 30 contributors, ending April 2016.
- Yale’s Beinecke Library archives the series.
- Final round was student essays — ten winners got $20,000 each.
- The bag artwork became a meme, then a national promotion.
- BÉIS collaborated on luggage inspired by the packaging in 2025.
Cultivating Thought
In May 2014 Chipotle began printing original essays on its bags and cups, under a project called Cultivating Thought, created in partnership with the novelist Jonathan Safran Foer.
The reasoning was stated at the time by Mark Crumpacker, then Chipotle Chief Creative and Development Officer, and it holds up as the clearest explanation of why the bag looks the way it does:
The series ran for four installments and ended on 18 April 2016. Chipotle has never published a reason for stopping.
Who Wrote for It
Across the four rounds, thirty contributors wrote original pieces. The names Chipotle itself has listed include:
- Judd Apatow
- Michael Lewis
- Paulo Coelho
- Amy Tan
- Lois Lowry
- Stephen Dubner
- Laura Hillenbrand
- Sue Monk Kidd
The final installment was different, and better than the premise suggests. Rather than commissioning more established writers, Chipotle printed ten essays by winners of a student writing contest it had run in 2015. Middle and high school students submitted 1,700-character essays on a food memory, Foer judged them, and each of the ten grand prizewinners received $20,000 toward their education.
Why Yale Collects It
The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University holds the Cultivating Thought series as a collection.
That is the strongest available evidence that the bags matter as objects rather than as marketing. A rare book library acquiring fast-food packaging is making a judgment that the series is a document of something — a moment when a restaurant chain commissioned original literature and distributed it at enormous scale to people who had not asked for it.
The Artwork and the Meme
The bag itself carries dense hand-drawn illustration, which Chipotle describes in its own words as the bold, passionate rambling artwork fans know from Chipotle takeout bags.
That artwork generated a long-running joke comparing heavily tattooed arms to a Chipotle bag — and Chipotle, to its credit, leaned into it rather than ignoring it:
- 11 June 2025 — the first Tatted Like a Chipotle Bag promotion: a one-hour buy-one-get-one offer on Friday the 13th for guests with any tattoo.
- 10 March 2026 — it returned, running across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, and added a Swae Lee limited-edition temporary flash-tattoo sheet inspired by the bag artwork, available only at the Midtown Miami restaurant.
It is a rare case of a brand building a national promotion out of a joke about its own packaging. Current offers are tracked on our promo codes page and the BOGO history on our BOGO deals guide.

Methodology
Company figures, leadership, ownership, restaurant counts and historical detail on this page are taken from Chipotle filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, from Chipotle company press releases and from chipotle.com, all checked in October 2026. Where a figure is derived from Chipotle own store directory rather than published by the company, this page says so. Where Chipotle does not publish something, that is stated rather than filled in from third-party sources. Company data changes with each quarterly report; confirm current figures in Chipotle latest filing.
