Chipotle Reviews: What the Data Actually Says
Chipotle Mexican Grill reviews are easy to find and nearly useless in isolation, because any large chain generates thousands of contradictory ones. The more honest approach is to look at the published aggregate measures: the national customer satisfaction index, app store ratings across millions of users, industry rankings, and what customers are doing rather than saying. Those four tell a consistent and slightly uncomfortable story.

Chipotle scored 77 out of 100 in the 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index for quick-service restaurants — up a point on 2025 but below the category average of 79, roughly 17th of 26 brands. Its apps rate far higher at 4.7 out of 5. And customers are returning: transactions grew in both quarters of 2026 so far.
- ACSI score 77 in 2026, against a category average of 79.
- Up one point from 76 in 2025, but still below average.
- Ranked about 17th of 26 named quick-service brands.
- Apps rate 4.7/5 — 1.9 million iOS ratings, ~559,000 on Android.
- 7th largest US chain by system sales, per Technomic 2026.
- Transactions rose in Q1 and Q2 2026 after falling in 2025.
Why Individual Reviews Do Not Help
A chain with 4,201 restaurants generates contradictory reviews by the thousand, and the ones that surface are self-selected by people motivated enough to write. Reading twenty of them tells you about twenty visits.
So this page uses four published aggregate measures instead: a national satisfaction index, app store ratings across millions of users, an industry size ranking, and Chipotle own reported customer behaviour. All four are checkable, which individual reviews are not.
The Satisfaction Score
The American Customer Satisfaction Index publishes an annual restaurant study. In the 2026 edition, released in June:
- Chipotle scored 77 out of 100 in quick-service restaurants.
- That is up one percent from 76 in 2025.
- The category average was 79, so Chipotle is below average.
In context against the other brands named in the same study:
| Score | Brands |
|---|---|
| 84 – 83 | Jersey Mike’s, Chick-fil-A |
| 81 – 80 | Jimmy John’s, Panda Express, KFC, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut |
| 79 (average) | Domino’s, Raising Cane’s, Starbucks, Subway |
| 78 | Burger King, Culver’s, Dunkin’, Little Caesars, Panera |
| 77 | Arby’s, Chipotle, Sonic, Wendy’s, Wingstop |
| 76 – 72 | Five Guys, Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Popeyes, Dairy Queen, McDonald’s |
Where Chipotle Scores Well
The gap between how people rate the app and how they rate the experience is the most interesting thing in this data.
| Measure | Score | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| iOS App Store | 4.7 / 5 | 1,875,215 ratings |
| Google Play | 4.7 / 5 | ~559,000 reviews |
| ACSI, restaurants | 77 / 100 | National survey |
Nearly 2.4 million app ratings averaging 4.7 is a strong result on a very large sample. It is consistent with where Chipotle has invested: digital orders were 38.3 percent of food and beverage revenue in the second quarter of 2026, and the company has built its growth around app ordering and Chipotlane pickup. Our app guide covers that side.
On size, the 2026 Technomic Top 500 report ranks Chipotle seventh among the largest United States restaurant chains by system sales — behind McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Dunkin’ and Wendy’s, ahead of Burger King, Domino’s and Subway.
What Customers Are Doing
Satisfaction surveys measure opinion. Transaction counts measure behaviour, and Chipotle files those with regulators, which makes them the hardest numbers available.
| Period | Comparable sales | Transactions |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 | −1.7% | Declining |
| Q1 2026 | +0.5% | +0.6% |
| Q2 2026 | +2.2% | +1.0% |
Chipotle headlined its first-quarter result as a return to positive transactions and described the second quarter as its second consecutive quarter of improving transaction growth. Revenue rose 9.3 percent to $3.35 billion in the second quarter, and in July 2026 it raised full-year guidance from about flat to low single digit growth.
Chipotle has also been unusually candid in its filings. Its second-quarter report told investors it had recently experienced low single digit headwinds to sales trends as customers responded to, among other things, recent United States food safety concerns and geopolitical developments.
The Two Recurring Issues
Portion size
This is the most persistent complaint and it needs careful handling, because what Chipotle actually said is less documented than people assume. Chipotle addressed portion sizes in 2024 through earnings-call remarks and media interviews by its then-chief executive — not in a press release and not in a regulatory filing. The word portion does not appear in its 2024 earnings releases.
What was reported at the time: a small number of restaurants were not serving to standard, generous portions were reaffirmed as the standard, and retraining followed, with Chipotle saying in late 2024 that it had added labour. Shareholder litigation over portion-size statements followed. Treat the specifics as reported rather than as published company policy.
Operationally, Chipotle has leaned into generosity since, running free double protein promotions in January and August 2026. Our portion sizes guide covers what to expect at the line.
Food safety
The 2015 crisis still shapes the brand, and 2016 comparable sales fell 20.4 percent as a result — the full figures are on our history guide.
A more recent event is worth stating precisely, because it was not a Chipotle outbreak. In August 2026 Chipotle filed a statement confirming that the Food and Drug Administration and the Minnesota Department of Health were investigating a supply-chain salmonella outbreak affecting several food-service retailers. Chipotle said the Minnesota Department of Health confirmed it had no ongoing concerns with Chipotle, that it used its ingredient traceability system to identify jalapeños from a common lot as a potential common ingredient, and that it proactively removed and replaced them. Its July guidance included no financial impact from the matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chipotle well reviewed?
By the main independent measure, it is middling. Chipotle scored 77 out of 100 in the 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index study of quick-service restaurants, against a category average of 79, placing it around 17th of the 26 brands named. Its mobile apps score much better, at 4.7 out of 5 on both platforms.
What is Chipotle’s customer satisfaction score?
77 out of 100 in the 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index, up one percent from 76 in 2025. The quick-service restaurant category average that year was 79. Chipotle sits level with Arby’s, Sonic, Wendy’s and Wingstop, ahead of McDonald’s at 72 and Taco Bell at 74, and behind Jersey Mike’s at 84 and Chick-fil-A at 83.
How is the Chipotle app rated?
Highly. The iOS App Store listing shows 4.7 out of 5 from 1,875,215 ratings, and Google Play shows 4.7 out of 5 from around 559,000 reviews, both read in October 2026. The app scores considerably better than the restaurant experience does on independent satisfaction measures.
Are Chipotle sales going up or down?
Up, after a difficult 2025. Comparable restaurant sales fell 1.7 percent across 2025, then rose 0.5 percent in the first quarter of 2026 and 2.2 percent in the second, which Chipotle described as its second consecutive quarter of improving transaction growth. It raised its full-year guidance in July 2026.
Did Chipotle really reduce portion sizes?
Chipotle addressed portion-size concerns publicly in 2024, but through earnings-call remarks and media interviews by its then-chief executive rather than in any press release or regulatory filing. Reported at the time: a small number of restaurants were not serving to standard, with generous portions reaffirmed as the standard and retraining to follow. Treat the specifics as reported rather than as a published company statement.
How big is Chipotle compared to other chains?
It ranks seventh among the largest United States restaurant chains by system sales in the 2026 Technomic Top 500 report, behind McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Dunkin’ and Wendy’s, and ahead of Burger King, Domino’s and Subway. Revenue was $11.9 billion in 2025.
Methodology
Figures on this page come from the American Customer Satisfaction Index Restaurant and Food Delivery Study 2026, from live Apple App Store and Google Play listings read in October 2026, from the Technomic Top 500 Chain Restaurant Report, and from Chipotle own filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This page deliberately uses published aggregate measures rather than individual customer reviews, which are not verifiable and are not representative at this scale. Where a measure is below average it is reported as such.
