Chipotle Group Order: How to Set One Up
A Chipotle group order solves the specific problem of eight people wanting eight different builds and nobody wanting to collect eight sets of instructions. You create it, send a link, everyone builds their own meal on their own phone, and you pay once. It is also frequently confused with catering, which is a completely different product with different pricing and a day of notice.

Sign in to Chipotle Rewards, start a group order, and share the link. Everyone builds their own meal, up to 15 meals total, at normal menu pricing from the full menu. The organiser pays β there is no split payment. It works for pickup or delivery and is same-day, unlike catering.
- 15 meals is the cap β on meals, not on people.
- Normal menu pricing, full menu, personalised meals.
- The organiser pays the whole bill. No split payment.
- A Rewards account is required to create one.
- Same day β unlike catering, which needs 24 hours.
- Need more than 15? That is catering, from $8.25 a person.
What It Is
Chipotle describes group ordering in six short lines on its own ordering page, and they are worth quoting because they answer most of the questions people arrive with:
- Order up to 15 meals total
- Normal menu pricing
- Full menu
- Personalised meals
- Organizer pays
- Order and eat today
The feature launched in September 2020 and works on both the app and the website. The thing it genuinely fixes is the coordination problem: each person builds their own meal on their own device, so nobody is transcribing seven people toppings into one order.
How to Set One Up
- Sign in to Chipotle Rewards. The organiser needs to be signed in β group ordering is tied to a Rewards account.
- Start a group order. Choose Start a Group Order on the app or chipotle.com.
- Copy and share the link. Chipotle generates a shareable link and tells you plainly that the order is limited to 15 meals.
- Let everyone add their meal. Participants open the link, build from the full menu, and add. You see a live count of participants and meals as it fills.
- Choose pickup or delivery. Either works.
- Pay and submit. You pay for all of it.
The Limits
| Limit | Detail |
|---|---|
| Meal cap | 15 meals total, not 15 people |
| Payment | Organiser pays everything; no split payment |
| Account | Organiser must be signed in to Rewards |
| Timing | Same day only |
| Pricing | Normal menu pricing, no group discount |
| Join deadline | Not published; stays open until you submit or cancel |
The meal cap is the one that trips groups up. Fifteen meals might be ten people if a few order two, so count meals rather than heads when you are deciding whether this works.
On payment: there is no split-pay feature and Chipotle does not pretend otherwise. Collect from people yourself. The flip side is that one order carries one set of delivery fees instead of eight separate orders each carrying their own, which is the real saving. Fee structure is on our delivery fees guide.
Group Order vs Catering vs Family Meal
These three get confused constantly, and picking the wrong one is how people end up paying more or discovering they needed to order yesterday.
| Group Order | Family Meal | Catering | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feeds | Up to 15 meals | 4 to 6 people | 6 to 200 people |
| Pricing | Normal menu pricing | Under $10 a person | From $8.25 a person |
| Notice | Same day | Ready in ~15 minutes | 24 hours |
| Format | Individual personalised meals | A shared spread | A shared spread |
| Who pays | Organiser | You | You |
Use a group order when everyone wants their own specific build. Use a Family Meal when four to six people will happily share one spread and you want it in fifteen minutes β see our family meal guide. Use catering above 15 meals, and order the day before; our catering menu has the packages. Chipotle own interface points you the same way, offering a catering link when you hit the 15-meal ceiling.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start a Chipotle group order?
Sign in to your Chipotle Rewards account on the app or chipotle.com, choose Start a Group Order, then copy the link Chipotle generates and share it with your group. Each person builds their own meal from the full menu on their own device, and you submit and pay for the whole order.
How many people can join a Chipotle group order?
Chipotle caps the order at 15 meals in total rather than capping the number of people. If some people want two meals each, that counts against the 15. Chipotle does not publish a separate limit on participants.
Who pays for a Chipotle group order?
The organiser. Chipotle states this directly on its ordering page, and the app offers no split payment option. Participants add their meals and the person who created the order pays for all of them, so you will need to settle up between yourselves separately.
Is a Chipotle group order cheaper?
No, and Chipotle does not claim it is. Its own description says normal menu pricing. The saving is in coordination and in fees rather than in food cost, because one delivery order carries one set of fees instead of several separate orders each carrying their own.
What is the difference between a Chipotle group order and catering?
Group ordering is up to 15 meals, same day, at normal menu pricing, with each person customising their own meal. Catering serves 6 to 200 people, starts at $8.25 per person, requires 24 hours notice, and is served as a spread rather than as individual personalised meals.
Can a Chipotle group order be delivered?
Yes. A group order can be submitted for pickup or for delivery, the same as any other order. Bear in mind that delivery carries higher menu prices and added fees, which Chipotle states at checkout, so a group order for pickup avoids both.
Methodology
Ordering options, fees, pickup modes and app behaviour on this page are taken from Chipotle own ordering website and app, Chipotle published FAQs, Chipotle press releases and Chipotle SEC filings, all checked in October 2026. Where Chipotle current app wording contradicts an older published FAQ, the newer app wording is used and the discrepancy is noted. Chipotle does not publish delivery fee amounts or a refund policy, so this page says so rather than repeating third-party figures. Fees, menu pricing and availability vary by location and partner and change without notice.
