Chipotle Pickup: Every Collection Option
Chipotle pickup is the option that avoids both the delivery fees and the higher delivery menu prices, which makes it the cheapest way to get Chipotle without standing in the queue. What most people do not realise is that there are four different pickup modes, your restaurant may only have some of them, and the app tells you which before you order if you know where to look.

Chipotle offers four pickup modes: the pickup shelf inside, a walk-up window, a Chipotlane drive-thru for digital orders, and digital kitchen locations. Chipotle reached 1,500 Chipotlanes in September 2026. Pickup avoids delivery fees and the higher menu prices Chipotle applies to delivery orders.
- Four pickup modes, and not every restaurant has all of them.
- Chipotlane is digital orders only — you cannot order at the window.
- 1,500 Chipotlanes as of late September 2026.
- Around 80% of new restaurants in 2026 include a Chipotlane.
- Pickup avoids the delivery markup as well as the fees.
- No live prep tracking on pickup — only a scheduled pickup time.
The Four Pickup Modes
Chipotle app recognises four distinct ways to collect, and which you get depends on the restaurant. The app labels locations in the picker and on the map so you can see what each one supports before you commit.
| Mode | What you do on arrival |
|---|---|
| Pickup inside | Go straight to the pickup shelf and grab your order |
| Walk-up window | Head to the walk-up window |
| Chipotlane | Head to the drive-thru window and give the name on your order |
| Digital kitchen | A digital-order location type, shown with its own map pin |
Those arrival instructions are Chipotle own wording from the order confirmation screen, so you do not have to guess. If you paid in store rather than in advance, you go to the register instead.
The pickup shelf is the one people underuse. Chipotle promotes mobile pickup shelves on its own app listing, and the instruction is explicit: go straight to the shelf. You do not need to queue or speak to anyone.
Chipotlane Explained
Chipotle defines a Chipotlane in its annual report as its drive-through format for guest pickup of digital orders. The second half of that sentence is the part that matters and the part people get wrong.
The build-out is moving fast enough to be worth quoting:
- 1,500 Chipotlanes as of late September 2026.
- The 1,000th opened in November 2024 — so 500 added in under two years.
- Q2 2026: 100 company restaurants opened, 80 with a Chipotlane.
- 2026 guidance: 350 to 370 openings, with around 80 percent of new company restaurants including one.
Digital orders were 38.3 percent of Chipotle food and beverage revenue in the second quarter of 2026, up from 35.5 percent a year earlier, which is the reason the drive-thru format is being built out this aggressively.
Why Pickup Costs Less
Most comparisons stop at the delivery fee. The gap is actually wider, because Chipotle charges two different things on a delivery order.
- The fees. A delivery fee, a service fee, a driver tip prompt and a separate crew tip prompt.
- The menu markup. Chipotle own checkout states that menu pricing for delivery is higher, and its bag screen says delivery includes higher menu prices as well as additional fees.
Pickup avoids both. The food is at in-store prices and there are no delivery charges at all. If you are weighing convenience against cost, that is the honest size of the trade — see our delivery fees guide for the full structure and our delivery guide for the channel comparison.
What Pickup Does Not Tell You
Worth setting expectations on, because it is a genuine gap. A Chipotle pickup order shows you:
- A scheduled pickup time.
- Arrival instructions for your pickup mode.
- A map and directions to the restaurant.
What it does not show is a live preparation state. There is no being-made status and no ready-now notification on a pickup order. The scheduled time is a target, not a live signal, which is why arriving a few minutes after it rather than before it tends to work better.
Delivery orders are different and do get live tracking, including the driver first name and a changing estimated arrival. Our order tracking guide covers both. If something has gone wrong, our cancellation guide and refund guide explain the routes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Chipotle pickup work?
You order ahead on the Chipotle app or chipotle.com, choose a pickup location and time, then collect. Depending on the restaurant you either go straight to the pickup shelf inside, use a walk-up window, or drive through a Chipotlane. Chipotle tells you which applies on your order confirmation screen.
What is a Chipotlane?
Chipotle describes it in its annual report as its drive-through format for guest pickup of digital orders. That means it is collection only — you cannot order at the window. You order ahead in the app or on chipotle.com, select Chipotlane pickup, then give the name on your order at the window.
How many Chipotlanes are there?
Chipotle reached 1,500 Chipotlanes in late September 2026, up from its 1,000th in November 2024. In the second quarter of 2026 it opened 100 company restaurants, 80 of them with a Chipotlane, and it expects around 80 percent of new company restaurants in 2026 to include one.
Is Chipotle pickup cheaper than delivery?
Yes, and by more than the fees. Delivery adds a delivery fee, a service fee and tips, but Chipotle also applies higher menu prices to delivery orders, which it states at checkout. Pickup avoids both the fees and the markup, so the gap is wider than the fee line suggests.
Can you track a Chipotle pickup order?
Not in the way you can track a delivery. A pickup order shows a scheduled pickup time, arrival instructions and directions, but there is no live being-made or ready-now status. Delivery orders do get live tracking with the driver’s first name and an estimated arrival.
How do I know if my Chipotle has a Chipotlane?
The app and website restaurant picker labels locations, showing Chipotlane, walk-up or digital kitchen tags on the restaurants that have them, with separate map pins. Select the restaurant first and the available pickup options appear at checkout.
Methodology
Ordering options, fees, pickup modes and app behaviour on this page are taken from Chipotle own ordering website and app, Chipotle published FAQs, Chipotle press releases and Chipotle SEC filings, all checked in October 2026. Where Chipotle current app wording contradicts an older published FAQ, the newer app wording is used and the discrepancy is noted. Chipotle does not publish delivery fee amounts or a refund policy, so this page says so rather than repeating third-party figures. Fees, menu pricing and availability vary by location and partner and change without notice.
