Chipotle Jobs: Roles, Pay and How to Apply
Chipotle jobs are worth understanding properly before you apply, because the pay you see advertised is only part of the picture and the promotion ladder is unusually steep. Chipotle says more than 85 percent of its restaurant managers began as crew members, and the average time from starting an application to your first shift is now about four days. Here is every role, what it pays, and what the path above it looks like.

Chipotle hires crew members from age 16, and the application runs through an AI assistant that can schedule your interview and send your offer. Chipotle says the average time from starting an application to your first day is about four days. Posted crew pay in Los Angeles is $20.00 to $21.00 an hour plus digital tips, and pay ranges are published only in states that require it.
- Minimum age is 16 for crew roles, per Chipotle own postings.
- Application to first day averages about four days.
- More than 85% of restaurant managers started as crew members.
- Path to leadership can take as little as 18 months, per Chipotle.
- Tuition is covered up to $5,250 a year after 120 days, part-time included.
- Pay ranges are only posted in states with transparency laws.
Every Role and What It Pays
Chipotle publishes pay ranges in job postings only in states with pay transparency laws, which currently means places like California, New York, Colorado and Washington. If you are applying in Texas or Florida, the posting will show no range at all. The figures below are real published ranges from live postings, not national averages.
| Role | Posted range | Location | Extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew Member | $20.00 – $21.00/hr | Los Angeles, CA | Digital tips |
| Kitchen Leader | $21.25 – $23.65/hr | Carlsbad, CA | Digital tips |
| Service Leader | $22.85 – $25.44/hr | Carlsbad, CA | Digital tips |
| Apprentice | $21.00 – $23.36/hr | Bohemia, NY | Quarterly bonus |
| Assistant Manager | $19.25 – $21.43/hr | Greeley, CO | Quarterly bonus |
| General Manager | $22.62 – $31.78/hr | Marina, CA | Quarterly bonus |
Note the split in what tops up the base: crew, kitchen leader and service leader postings say pay is eligible for digital tips. Apprentice and above are on quarterly cash bonuses instead. Full breakdown on our Chipotle pay guide and manager salary guide.
The Promotion Ladder
This is the part of working at Chipotle that genuinely distinguishes it, and it is worth taking seriously. The official progression runs:
Crew → Certified Trainer → Kitchen Leader → Service Leader → Apprentice → General Manager → Certified Training Manager or Restaurateur
Above restaurant level it continues through New Restaurant Opening Lead, Field Leader, Regional Training Manager, Team Director, Regional Director of Operations, and Regional Vice President.
- More than 85% of Chipotle restaurant managers began their careers as crew members, per Chipotle September 2026 statement.
- Chipotle says the path to leadership can take as little as 18 months.
- In 2024 Chipotle promoted 23,000 team members, and five of its eleven Regional Vice Presidents started as crew.
- Restaurateur is not a separate job. It is the designation given to the best performing general managers.
One caveat worth knowing: Chipotle quotes its internal promotion rate as 80 percent, 85 percent and 90 percent in different places on its own site. The figure above is the most recent.
The Apprentice role is expanding fast
In September 2026 Chipotle announced it aims to place an Apprentice in every one of its 4,200-plus company restaurants by the end of 2027. Apprentices currently support around three quarters of restaurants. The role owns training and the digital makeline and adds leadership cover at peak periods and weekends, and Chipotle describes it as a critical bridge to becoming a general manager.
If you are joining with the intention of progressing, that expansion means more of these positions opening than at any point previously.
How to Apply
There are two routes, and both end in the same place:
- Text CHIPJOBS to 21414, which Chipotle promotes directly on its careers site.
- Apply on Chipotle careers site, searching by role and location.
Either way you will be handed to an AI assistant called Ava Cado, introduced in October 2024 and built by Paradox. It chats with you, answers questions about the role, collects your basic information, schedules your interview with the hiring manager, and sends the offer if the manager selects you. It operates in English, Spanish, French and German.

Requirements
Chipotle crew postings list two hard requirements and nothing more:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be able to communicate in the primary language or languages of the work location.
No experience is required for crew roles. Chipotle does not publish a pre-employment drug testing policy anywhere on its careers site or in its postings, and it does not publish a dress code or grooming policy beyond confirming that shirts and hats are provided free. We cover both honestly on our drug testing page and uniform guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a job at Chipotle?
Apply at Chipotle official careers site or text CHIPJOBS to 21414. The application is handled by an AI assistant called Ava Cado, which collects your details, answers questions, schedules your interview with the hiring manager, and sends the offer if you are selected. Chipotle says the average time from starting an application to a first shift is about four days.
How old do you have to be to work at Chipotle?
Sixteen. Chipotle job postings state the requirement directly as being at least 16 years old. State child labour laws can raise that locally or restrict the hours a 16 or 17 year old can work, and Chipotle does not address those variations on its careers site.
How much does Chipotle pay?
It depends heavily on your state. Chipotle publishes pay ranges only where transparency laws require it. Live examples include crew members in Los Angeles at $20.00 to $21.00 an hour plus digital tips, and general managers in Marina, California at $22.62 to $31.78 an hour plus quarterly bonuses. In states without those laws no range is shown at all.
Is Chipotle a good place to work?
The strongest argument in its favour is promotion. Chipotle says more than 85 percent of its restaurant managers began as crew, that the path to leadership can take as little as 18 months, and it is placing an Apprentice in every restaurant by the end of 2027. The tuition benefit is also genuinely unusual for hourly work. The counterweight is that it is demanding physical restaurant work at peak hours.
Does Chipotle pay for college?
Yes, up to $5,250 per calendar year through Cultivate Education, powered by Guild, and it pays 100 percent of tuition for a set of select debt-free degree programs. You are eligible after 120 days, and part-time crew qualify provided they average at least 15 hours a week.
What is the highest position at a Chipotle restaurant?
Within a single restaurant, General Manager, with Restaurateur being the elite designation awarded to the best performing general managers rather than a separate job. Above restaurant level the ladder continues through Field Leader, Team Director, Regional Director of Operations and Regional Vice President.
Methodology
Pay ranges, role titles, benefits and requirements on this page are taken from Chipotle own careers site at jobs.chipotle.com, from live Chipotle job postings, and from Chipotle company press releases, all checked in October 2026. Posted pay ranges appear only in states with pay transparency laws, so the figures quoted are real postings rather than national averages. Where Chipotle does not publish a policy, this page says so rather than repeating third-party claims. Confirm current details on Chipotle official careers site before applying.
