Chipotle Manager Salary: Apprentice to Restaurateur
Chipotle manager salary is one of the most misquoted figures online, because Chipotle publishes two very different sets of numbers and most pages conflate them. One is real posted pay from live job listings. The other is a total rewards figure that includes the assessed value of benefits. Knowing which is which changes the answer by tens of thousands of dollars.

Posted management ranges include Apprentice at $21.00 to $23.36 an hour in New York, Assistant Manager at $19.25 to $21.43 in Colorado, and General Manager at $22.62 to $31.78 in California, all with quarterly cash bonuses. The widely quoted $93,100 general manager figure is total rewards including benefits, not salary.
- General Manager: $22.62 to $31.78 an hour posted in California.
- Apprentice: $21.00 to $23.36 an hour posted in New York.
- Management is paid on quarterly bonuses, not digital tips.
- Quarterly bonus equals one week of pay when the restaurant performs.
- Restaurateur is a designation, not a separate job you apply for.
- $93,100 is total rewards, not a general manager salary.
Posted Management Pay
These are ranges Chipotle published on live job postings. They appear only in states with pay transparency laws, so the location attached to each one is not decoration β it is most of the explanation for the figure.
| Role | Posted hourly range | Location | On top |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | $21.00 β $23.36 | Bohemia, NY | Quarterly cash bonus |
| Assistant Manager | $19.25 β $21.43 | Greeley, CO | Quarterly cash bonus |
| General Manager | $22.62 β $31.78 | Marina, CA | Quarterly cash bonus |
Two things stand out. First, Chipotle posts general manager pay hourly in California rather than as a salary, which catches people out. Second, management roles are compensated with quarterly cash bonuses rather than the digital tips that crew, kitchen leaders and service leaders receive. That is a clean dividing line at the Apprentice rung.
What Each Role Does
Apprentice
The bridge into management. Chipotle describes apprentices as learning to lead the entire restaurant, including recruiting and interviewing new hires, scheduling and training the team. The role owns training and the digital makeline and adds leadership coverage during peak periods and weekends.
This is the fastest-growing management role at the company. In September 2026 Chipotle announced it aims to place an Apprentice in every one of its 4,200-plus restaurants by the end of 2027, up from around three quarters today. Chipotle also notes that restaurants with Apprentices generally achieve better operational scores.
General Manager
Runs the restaurant. The top role within a single location, responsible for the team, the operation and the numbers.
Restaurateur
Not a job you apply for. Chipotle describes it as the designation given to its best performing general managers β those running an excellent restaurant with sustainable results. No restaurateur job postings exist because it is an internal recognition rather than a vacancy. Chipotle 2021 announcement described a path to it in as little as three and a half years, with average compensation around $100,000.
Above the restaurant
The ladder continues through New Restaurant Opening Lead, Field Leader, Regional Training Manager, Team Director, Regional Director of Operations and Regional Vice President. Chipotle has stated that five of its eleven Regional Vice Presidents started as crew members.
The Number Everyone Misreads
Chipotle publishes a second table on its careers site labelled total rewards, including cash compensation and benefits, dated as of October 2026:
| Role | Total rewards (cash + benefits value) |
|---|---|
| Apprentice | $73,100 |
| General Manager | $93,100 |
| Restaurateur | $116,100 |
These figures include the assessed value of healthcare, tuition assistance, bonuses, meals and every other benefit. They are not salaries, and Chipotle does not present them as such. A great many pages reprint $93,100 as a Chipotle general manager salary. It is not one, and the gap between that figure and the posted hourly range is the reason this confusion matters.
Getting There
Chipotle fills management internally at a rate that is unusual even by restaurant standards. More than 85 percent of its restaurant managers began as crew, it promoted 23,000 team members in 2024, and it says the path to leadership can take as little as 18 months.
One lever worth knowing: employees who use the tuition benefit are promoted roughly 1.4 times as often as those who do not, and Chipotle earlier reported that crew using it were substantially more likely to move into management. Details on our tuition reimbursement page.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Chipotle general manager make?
Chipotle posts general manager pay as an hourly range where state law requires disclosure. A live California posting shows $22.62 to $31.78 an hour plus quarterly cash bonuses. The frequently quoted $93,100 figure is Chipotle’s total rewards number, which includes the assessed value of benefits, and is not a salary.
What is a Chipotle apprentice and what does it pay?
Apprentice is the rung directly below general manager and Chipotle describes it as a critical bridge to that role. Apprentices learn to run the whole restaurant, including recruiting, interviewing, scheduling and training, and own training and the digital makeline. A live New York posting shows $21.00 to $23.36 an hour plus quarterly cash bonuses.
What is a Chipotle restaurateur?
It is the elite designation Chipotle awards to its best performing general managers who are running an excellent restaurant with sustainable results. It is not a separate job you can apply for and no restaurateur postings exist. Chipotle 2021 announcement described reaching it in as little as three and a half years with average compensation around $100,000.
How long does it take to become a Chipotle manager?
Chipotle says its path to leadership can take as little as 18 months, and that more than 85 percent of its restaurant managers began as crew members. The September 2026 commitment to place an Apprentice in every restaurant by the end of 2027 is expanding the number of management positions available.
Do Chipotle managers get bonuses?
Yes. Apprentice, assistant manager and general manager postings all cite quarterly cash bonuses rather than digital tips. Chipotle states the quarterly bonus is equal to one week of pay when the restaurant performs well, which across a sustained year amounts to roughly one additional month of pay.
Is Chipotle general manager pay hourly or salary?
Chipotle posts general manager pay as an hourly range in California, which surprises people expecting a salaried role. Structures can vary by state and by restaurant, so the posting for your own location is the only reliable source.
Methodology
Pay ranges, role titles, benefits and requirements on this page are taken from Chipotle own careers site at jobs.chipotle.com, from live Chipotle job postings, and from Chipotle company press releases, all checked in October 2026. Posted pay ranges appear only in states with pay transparency laws, so the figures quoted are real postings rather than national averages. Where Chipotle does not publish a policy, this page says so rather than repeating third-party claims. Confirm current details on Chipotle official careers site before applying.
