Chipotle Carne Asada: What It Is and When It Returns

Chipotle carne asada is the chain most searched menu item, and the first thing you need to know is that it is not on the menu right now. The page Chipotle keeps live for it still says it is available, which has not been true since 2025. Here is what carne asada actually is, the four times it has returned, and the one nutrition figure Chipotle publishes for it.

Quick Answer

Carne asada is not currently available. It has returned four times, most recently in September 2025, and was absent from Chipotle entire 2026 protein schedule. When it runs it is marinated, grilled, hand-cut and finished with fresh-squeezed lime and cilantro, carrying 29g of protein per serving. The current limited-time protein is Pollo Asado.

🎯 Key Takeaways
  • Not on the menu as of October 2026 — Pollo Asado holds the slot.
  • Has returned four times since its 2019 national launch.
  • 29g of protein per serving, per Chipotle own release.
  • Marinated with cumin, coriander, garlic and oregano.
  • Finished with fresh-squeezed lime and hand-chopped cilantro.
  • Chipotle publishes no heat rating for it, unlike other proteins.

Is It Available? No

As of October 2026, carne asada is not on the Chipotle menu, and it was absent from Chipotle entire 2026 protein schedule.

2026 limited-time protein When it ran
Chicken al Pastor From 10 February 2026
Chipotle Honey Chicken From 28 April, final week announced 27 August
Pollo Asado From 31 August 2026 — current
Carne asada Did not run in 2026
Why almost every source gets this wrong. Chipotle keeps chipotle.com/carne-asada live between runs, and its FAQ on that page still reads that carne asada is available as a limited-time protein. That page was last updated in October 2025 — it is leftover campaign copy, not an availability statement.

And one more trap worth knowing: the Temporarily Unavailable label that appears on Chipotle product cards is a static placeholder in the page markup. It shows up on the currently-available Pollo Asado page too, so it tells you nothing either way.

The reliable check is the ordering menu in the Chipotle app for your own restaurant. If it is not a selectable protein there, it is not available.

What Carne Asada Is

The name means grilled meat in Spanish, and traditionally refers to cuts like skirt or flank steak. At Chipotle it is a preparation rather than a different cut, and the preparation is what makes it worth ordering.

  1. Tender cuts of Responsibly Raised beef — Chipotle standard sourcing claim, covered on our sourcing guide.
  2. Marinated, then grilled with cumin, coriander, garlic and oregano.
  3. Hand-cut, rather than chopped into cubes like regular steak.
  4. Finished with fresh-squeezed lime and hand-chopped cilantro as it is served.

That last step is the one people remember. Nothing else on the Chipotle line gets finished with fresh citrus and herbs at the moment of serving, and it gives carne asada a brightness the rest of the menu does not have. Chipotle lists it as Whole30, Keto and Paleo friendly.

How it compares head to head with regular steak is covered on our carne asada vs steak comparison. The rest of the lineup is on our meat options guide.

The Nutrition

Chipotle publishes one figure for carne asada directly, and it is the important one:

29 grams of protein per serving, stated in Chipotle own announcement and labelled on the side item. That makes it the highest-protein beef option Chipotle has offered.
Protein, per 4 oz Protein Calories
Chicken 32g 180
Carne asada 29g Not published
Barbacoa 24g 170
Carnitas 23g 210
Steak 21g 150
Sofritas 8g 150

Note what is missing. Carne asada does not appear in Chipotle published nutrition chart, which covers the permanent menu only. So there is no official calorie, fat or sodium figure for it in that document. Chipotle nutrition data has carried higher calorie and sodium values for carne asada than for regular steak, consistent with a marinated preparation, but the 29g protein figure is the only one Chipotle states in plain language, and it is the one we are willing to put weight on.

Figures for everything that is on the permanent menu are on our toppings and ingredients guide.

Is It Spicy?

Chipotle does not say, and that is a more interesting answer than it sounds — because it rates almost everything else.

Item Chipotle own heat wording
Smoked brisket Mild spice level, a subtle kick
Chicken al Pastor Mild to medium, flavourful not fiery
Pollo Asado A mild kick
Chipotle honey chicken Light heat
Adobo Ranch Medium
Carne asada No rating published

What Chipotle does describe is flavour: bold, with smoky depth, and brightness from the lime and cilantro. The marinade is built on cumin, coriander, garlic and oregano — aromatics, not chiles — so there is no obvious source of chile heat in it.

We would expect it to be intense rather than hot, but since Chipotle has not rated it, we are not going to state that as fact. If you want heat with it, that comes from the salsas — our salsa guide ranks all four and our spiciest and mildest guide covers the whole menu.

The Four Returns

Date What happened
19 September 2019 National launch as a limited-time protein
November 2019 Extended into early 2020
22 September 2020 Return
13 September 2023 Return, plus a first-ever Carne Asada Quesadilla, digital-only
4 September 2025 Return — Chipotle called it the fourth time it had returned

Two things stand out. Every single appearance has been in September, usually tied to the start of football season. And Chipotle described it in 2025 as its most searched menu item, which tells you the demand is real and measured.

Chipotle also said it would run three to four protein offerings during 2026, up from a previous cadence of two a year. More slots means more chances for a return, but it runs one at a time — so Pollo Asado has to end first. Our limited-time items guide has the full rotation and our news page tracks announcements.

What to Order Instead

What you wanted Order instead Why
Maximum protein Double chicken 32g per 4oz, the most of any protein
Beef, leaner Steak 150 cal and 330mg sodium per 4oz
Deep, rich beef flavour Barbacoa Braised for hours, 24g protein
Crisp edges and texture Carnitas The only protein with genuine crisp
Something limited-time Pollo Asado The current one, with a mild kick
The lime and cilantro finish Any protein, extra lime Free at the line

That last row is the useful hack. The fresh-squeezed lime finish is a large part of what makes carne asada distinctive, and extra lime costs nothing — it gets you part of the way there on any protein. Our best bowl combinations and highest-protein order guide cover the builds.

Barbacoa and carnitas are explained separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Chipotle have carne asada right now?

No, not as of October 2026. Carne asada is a limited-time protein, and it did not appear in Chipotle’s 2026 schedule at all — that ran Chicken al Pastor in February, Chipotle Honey Chicken from April until the end of August, and Pollo Asado from 31 August. Chipotle keeps its carne asada page live between runs, which is why many sources say otherwise.

What is carne asada at Chipotle?

Tender cuts of Responsibly Raised beef, marinated and then grilled with cumin, coriander, garlic and oregano, hand-cut, and finished with fresh-squeezed lime and hand-chopped cilantro. The name means grilled meat in Spanish and traditionally refers to cuts like skirt or flank steak. Chipotle lists it as Whole30, Keto and Paleo friendly.

How much protein is in Chipotle carne asada?

29 grams per serving, which Chipotle stated directly in its 2025 announcement and labels on the side item. That makes it the highest-protein beef option Chipotle has offered, against 21 grams for regular steak and 24 for barbacoa. Chipotle does not publish a full macro breakdown for it in its nutrition chart.

Is Chipotle carne asada spicy?

Chipotle does not say. It publishes heat ratings for several proteins — brisket as mild, Pollo Asado as a mild kick, honey chicken as light heat — but it has never rated carne asada. Its own description talks about bold flavour, smoky depth and the brightness of lime and cilantro rather than heat, and the marinade is built on aromatics rather than chiles.

How many times has carne asada come back?

Four. It launched nationally on 19 September 2019, was extended into early 2020, then returned in September 2020, September 2023 and again in September 2025 — Chipotle described that last one as the fourth time it had returned. The 2023 run also brought a first-ever Carne Asada Quesadilla as a digital-only item.

When will carne asada come back to Chipotle?

Chipotle does not announce return dates in advance. Every single return so far has landed in September, which is the clearest pattern available, and Chipotle said it would run three to four protein offerings during 2026 rather than its previous two. Pollo Asado would need to finish first, because Chipotle runs one limited-time protein at a time.

Methodology

Launch and return dates, preparation and the protein figure come from Chipotle own press releases, checked in October 2026. Availability was assessed against Chipotle 2026 protein schedule, its homepage and its published nutrition data. Full per-serving macros for carne asada are not in Chipotle published nutrition chart, so only the protein figure Chipotle states directly is given as official. Chipotle publishes no heat rating for carne asada, so none is asserted here. Chipotle does not pre-announce return dates.
