What Counts as a Chipotle Entree?
What is a Chipotle entree sounds like a pedantic question until a promotion fails at the till. Chipotle does define the term, in the small print of its own offers, and the definition includes one item most guides wrongly say is excluded. Getting this right is the difference between a $6 Boorito and an argument at the register.

Chipotle defines it in its own promotion terms: a burrito, burrito bowl, single order of three tacos, quesadilla or salad. That is five items. Kids meals and 3 pointers are explicitly not entrees. A quesadilla does count, but it is excluded from in-restaurant offers because it is digital-only.
- Five items qualify, per Chipotle own written definition.
- A quesadilla IS an entree β but it is digital-only.
- Kids meals and 3 pointers are explicitly excluded.
- Sides, chips, drinks and dips never count as an entree.
- Guac, queso and extra meat cost extra, even on a free entree.
- One taco is not an entree β only an order of three.
The Official Definition
Chipotle does define this, and it does so in the small print of its own promotions. The term it uses is a regular menu entree item, and it lists them:
| Item | Entree? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Burrito | Yes | The standard wrapped build |
| Burrito bowl | Yes | Same build, no tortilla |
| Salad | Yes | Greens base instead of rice |
| Three tacos | Yes | An order of three is one entree |
| Quesadilla | Yes | But digital-only, which matters below |
So it is five items, not four β and the quesadilla is on the list. A great deal of advice gets that wrong, because the quesadilla is frequently excluded from individual offers and people conclude it is not an entree at all. It is.
Note the taco wording carefully: a single order of three. That means three tacos is one entree, and it also means one taco is not an entree. Chipotle sells a single taco on its High Protein Menu, and it would not qualify.
What Is Excluded
Two items Chipotle names explicitly, and one large category.
Kids meals and 3 pointers
Chipotle promotion terms state plainly that kids meals do not count as an entree purchase, and its multi-entree terms add 3 pointers to that exclusion. Those are the only two menu items Chipotle names as not being entrees.
Everything that is not a main dish
- Chips, in any size
- Dips β guacamole, queso, salsa, Adobo Ranch
- Drinks
- Sides of protein, rice or beans
And the quesadilla problem, which is different
The quesadilla is an entree by definition, but it is digital-exclusive β orderable only through the Chipotle app or website. So any promotion that is in-restaurant only cannot be redeemed on one, for a practical reason rather than a definitional one.
Chipotle Boorito 2026 terms illustrate this neatly, and inconsistently. The newsroom version states the $6 entree offer is not valid for quesadilla, kids meals, catering, mobile, online or delivery orders. The version on Chipotle own Boorito terms page omits the word quesadilla and lists only kids meals, catering, mobile, online and delivery.
Also commonly excluded from entree promotions: catering, Burritos by the Box, Family Meals, and orders placed on third-party delivery platforms. Our online menu guide covers which items are digital-only.

Modifiers Are Charged Separately
This is where a discounted entree stops being entirely cheap, and Chipotle states it plainly in its terms.
From the Boorito 2026 terms, these cost extra even on a discounted entree:
- Guacamole β except on veggie entrees, where it is already included
- Queso
- Extra meat
- Other modifiers
Also not included: taxes, gratuities and sides.
So a $6 Boorito entree with guacamole is not $6. Add $2.95 to $3.40 for the guacamole and it is closer to nine dollars before tax. Our guacamole cost guide has the current figures.
How It Plays Out in Real Offers
Two current examples make the rules concrete.
Boorito 2026 β an entree-based offer
- $6 entrees on 31 October 2026, after 3pm local through closing.
- Costume required, and the restaurant decides whether it qualifies.
- Must be a Chipotle Rewards member and scan the card at checkout.
- In-restaurant only β no mobile, online, delivery or catering.
- Not valid on quesadillas or kids meals β the quesadilla because it is digital-only.
- One discounted entree per costumed guest.
Veterans Day 2026 β a minimum-spend offer
- Free chips and a dip with a $5 purchase, all day on 11 November 2026.
- The $5 is calculated excluding the free item, taxes and tips.
- In-restaurant only β not valid on catering, mobile, online or delivery.
- Requires valid military or veteran identification at checkout.
Notice the difference in what matters. The first asks whether your item is an entree. The second only asks whether you spent enough, which any combination of items can satisfy. Full detail on our Veterans Day guide and Boorito guide.
Before You Rely on a Deal
Chipotle does not publish its definition outside promotion small print, and exclusions vary between offers. Five seconds of checking avoids the problem:
- Is my item one of the five? Burrito, bowl, salad, three tacos or quesadilla.
- Is the offer in-restaurant only? If so, a quesadilla will not work, whatever the terms say.
- Is it a kids meal or a 3 pointer? Those are named exclusions.
- Does it need a Rewards scan? Boorito does. Our rewards guide covers setup.
- What will the modifiers add? Guacamole and queso are charged on top.
Current offers and their terms are tracked on our promo codes page and BOGO deals guide. What goes into each entree format is on our build your own guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as an entree at Chipotle?
Chipotle sets it out verbatim in its own promotion terms: a burrito, a burrito bowl, a single order of three tacos, a quesadilla, or a salad. That is five items. Kids meals are explicitly excluded, as are 3 pointers, and sides such as chips, dips and drinks never count.
Is a quesadilla an entree at Chipotle?
Yes. Chipotle own written definition of a regular menu entree item names the quesadilla directly, noting it is only available via the Chipotle app or website. What trips people up is that many promotions are in-restaurant only, and a digital-exclusive item cannot be redeemed in a restaurant, so it gets excluded from those specific offers rather than from the definition.
Do chips and guacamole count as an entree?
No. Chips, dips, drinks and sides are never entrees under Chipotle promotion terms. This matters differently for offers with a minimum spend: Chipotle Veterans Day 2026 offer requires a $5 purchase, and sides do count toward a spend threshold even though they are not entrees.
Does a free entree include guacamole?
No. Chipotle promotion terms consistently state that modifiers cost extra, including guacamole, queso and extra meat. The Boorito 2026 terms spell this out, with guacamole chargeable except on veggie entrees, where it is included as standard. Taxes, gratuities and sides are also excluded.
Is a taco order one entree or three?
One. Chipotle definition specifies a single order of three tacos, so three tacos is one entree. The corollary matters too: a single taco is not an entree. Chipotle sells one on its High Protein Menu, and it would not qualify for an entree promotion.
What is a 3 pointer at Chipotle?
It is a menu item Chipotle names directly in its multi-entree promotion terms as not counting toward an entree purchase, alongside kids meals. If you are relying on a buy-one-get-one or a discounted entree offer, a 3 pointer will not satisfy the qualifying purchase.
Why does the entree definition matter?
Because almost every Chipotle deal is written in those terms. Buy-one-get-one offers, the $6 Boorito, promo codes and Rewards offers are nearly all framed around entrees, so whether your order qualifies decides whether the discount applies. Checking the specific offer terms takes a few seconds and avoids the problem.
Methodology
The definition quoted on this page is Chipotle own wording from the published terms of its promotions, including its Red Chimichurri terms and its Cilantro Lime Sauce terms, with exclusions taken from its jersey promotion, multi-entree and Boorito 2026 terms, all checked in October 2026. Chipotle does not publish a single standing definition outside promotion small print, and the exclusions attached to individual offers differ, so readers are told to check the specific offer. Where two versions of the same terms differ, both are described.
