Is Chipotle Fast Food or Fast Casual?
Is Chipotle a fast food restaurant or a fast casual one is a question with two defensible answers, and the interesting part is that the evidence genuinely splits. Chipotle chief executive sits on a fast casual industry council. The largest independent customer satisfaction study in the United States files Chipotle under quick-service restaurants and scores it against McDonald’s and Taco Bell. Both of those are true at once.

Fast casual is the category Chipotle identifies with — its food is prepared in the restaurant, it has no table service, and its CEO sits on the National Restaurant Association Fast Casual Industry Council. But the American Customer Satisfaction Index classes it as a quick-service restaurant, and with 1,500 drive-thrus the practical experience is closer to fast food than the label suggests.
- Chipotle identifies as fast casual — its CEO sits on a fast casual council.
- The ACSI classes it as quick service, scoring it against McDonald’s.
- Food is prepared in the restaurant, which is the fast casual test.
- 1,500 Chipotlane drive-thrus pull it toward fast food.
- It owns every restaurant in the US, Canada and Europe — unusual.
- Ranked 7th largest US chain, among the fast food giants.
What the Two Categories Mean
Neither term is defined by a regulator. They are industry conventions, which is exactly why Chipotle can sit in both at once depending on who is doing the sorting.
| Fast food / quick service | Fast casual | |
|---|---|---|
| Food preparation | Largely prepared off site, finished quickly in-restaurant | Ingredients prepped in the restaurant, assembled to order |
| Price point | Low — value menus at $1 to $3 | Higher — typically $10 and up for an entree |
| Service | Counter or drive-thru, no table service | Counter, no table service |
| Ownership | Heavily franchised | More often company-operated |
| Customisation | Limited, fixed menu items | Built to order |
Notice that service model is identical in both columns. That is the root of the confusion: the thing people most associate with the distinction — whether somebody brings food to your table — does not distinguish them at all.
The Case for Fast Casual
Three pieces of evidence, and the third is the strongest thing on the record.
1. The food is prepared in the restaurant
This is the actual dividing line. Chipotle crew prep ingredients through the morning before opening — chopping, cooking and portioning — and every order is assembled in front of the customer. That is the fast casual production model rather than the quick-service one.
2. The price point
A Chipotle bowl runs $10.75 to $13.75 before guacamole or queso at $2.95 to $3.40 each. Taco Bell value menu, by contrast, carries ten items at three dollars or less. These are not competing on the same price tier, and our Chipotle vs Taco Bell comparison covers how wide that gap is.
3. Chipotle own affiliation
Supporting that, Chipotle owns and operates every restaurant in the United States, Canada and Europe, and describes itself as the only restaurant company of its size to do so. Fast food at this scale is overwhelmingly franchised — Taco Bell, for instance, is more than 90 percent franchised in the United States. Our ownership guide covers that structure.

The Case for Fast Food
Now the other side, which is stronger than Chipotle marketing would suggest.
The main satisfaction index files it as quick service
The American Customer Satisfaction Index publishes the most widely cited independent restaurant study in the United States. In its 2026 edition, Chipotle appears in the quick-service restaurants category, scored directly against McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Subway and Burger King.
Chipotle scored 77 out of 100 against a category average of 79 — below average, and level with Arby’s, Sonic, Wendy’s and Wingstop. Those are fast food brands, and the index treats Chipotle as a peer. The full breakdown is on our Chipotle reviews guide.
The drive-thru build-out
Chipotle reached 1,500 Chipotlanes on 29 September 2026, having added 500 in under two years. It says the format consistently delivers higher volumes and returns than traditional restaurants, making it its preferred format for new development, with around 80 percent of 2026 openings including one.
A drive-thru-led expansion strategy is a fast food strategy. The one meaningful difference: a Chipotlane only hands over digital orders placed in advance — there is no ordering at the window. Our pickup guide explains how it works.
The scale and the speed
- 4,201 restaurants as of 30 June 2026.
- 7th largest US chain by system sales in the 2026 Technomic Top 500 — behind McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Dunkin’ and Wendy’s.
- 38.3 percent of food and beverage revenue came through digital channels in the second quarter of 2026.
- A Family Meal feeding four to six is ready in as little as fifteen minutes.
Fifteen minutes for a meal for six is a quick-service turnaround by any standard.
The Honest Answer
Fast casual is the correct industry term, and quick service is the honest description of the experience.
| By this measure | Chipotle is |
|---|---|
| How the food is made | Fast casual |
| Price point | Fast casual |
| Ownership model | Fast casual |
| Its own industry affiliation | Fast casual |
| ACSI classification | Quick service |
| Drive-thru strategy | Quick service |
| Speed and scale | Quick service |
Chipotle effectively invented the category it sits in, and then grew large enough that the category stopped containing it. At four thousand restaurants with a drive-thru-first expansion plan, it operates like a fast food company that happens to chop its own onions.
Why the Label Matters at All
Two reasons, and the second is the one worth acting on.
It shapes expectations on price. People who file Chipotle under fast food arrive expecting fast food prices and find a bowl costing three or four times a value-menu item. That mismatch is the single most common complaint about Chipotle, and our why Chipotle is expensive guide sets out where the money actually goes.
It encourages a health assumption that does not hold. Fast casual carries a halo, and it does real damage to how people order. A Chipotle burrito runs 850 to 1,200 calories and sodium is high across much of the menu. The category label does not order for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chipotle fast food?
It depends who is classifying it. Chipotle positions itself as fast casual, and its chief executive sits on the National Restaurant Association Fast Casual Industry Council. But the American Customer Satisfaction Index places Chipotle inside its quick-service restaurants category, scoring it alongside McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Subway. Both classifications are defensible.
What is the difference between fast food and fast casual?
Fast food is built on speed and price, typically with food prepared off site and finished quickly in the restaurant, low price points and heavy franchising. Fast casual sits above it: food made to order from ingredients prepped in the restaurant, higher prices, better interiors, and still no table service. The boundary is informal rather than defined by any regulator.
Why do people call Chipotle fast casual?
Because of how the food is made. Ingredients are prepared in the restaurant rather than arriving finished, each order is built in front of you, and the price point sits well above fast food — a bowl runs $10.75 to $13.75 before extras. Chipotle also owns and operates every restaurant in the United States, Canada and Europe rather than franchising, which is more typical of fast casual.
Is Chipotle considered a restaurant or fast food?
Commercially it is counted among the largest restaurant chains: the 2026 Technomic Top 500 report ranks Chipotle seventh in the United States by system sales, ahead of Burger King, Domino’s and Subway. It is a restaurant chain, and whether you call its category fast food or fast casual is a question about positioning rather than about what it legally is.
Does having a drive-thru make Chipotle fast food?
It is the strongest argument for it. Chipotle reached 1,500 Chipotlanes in September 2026 and says the format consistently delivers higher volumes and returns than traditional restaurants, making it the preferred option for new builds. The difference is that a Chipotlane only hands over digital orders placed in advance — you cannot order at the window as you would at a fast food drive-thru.
Is Chipotle healthier than fast food?
It can be, but not automatically. Chipotle publishes a full nutrition calculator, which makes a controlled order easy to build, and a well-built bowl delivers substantial protein and vegetables. A loaded burrito runs 850 to 1,200 calories, and sodium is high across much of the menu, so the category label does not do the work for you.
Methodology
Company figures, leadership, ownership, restaurant counts and historical detail on this page are taken from Chipotle filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, from Chipotle company press releases and from chipotle.com, all checked in October 2026. Where a figure is derived from Chipotle own store directory rather than published by the company, this page says so. Where Chipotle does not publish something, that is stated rather than filled in from third-party sources.
